- Successful climate change adaptation outcomes are supported by decision-making that is informed by the best available climate science (e.g. Burton 1997; Sarewitz and Pielke Jr 1999; Patt and Dessai 2005; Power et al. 2005; Meinke et al. 2009) and also from previous lessons learnt on knowledge use in policymaking contexts (e.g. Gieryn 1983; Hoppe 1999, 2005; Guston 2001; Colebatch 2005, 2006). However, a fundamental gap exists between the information that climate science provides and the information that is practically useful for (and needed by) end-users and decision-makers looking to successfully adapt to climate variability and change (e.g. McNie 2007; Lemos et al. 2012; Kiem and Austin 2013a). In some cases the climate science, and associated information, is simply too ‘uncertain’ to be of any practical use, or the uncertainty is not adequately quantified and communicated. Further, as demonstrated by Kiem and Austin (2013a, b), even if the climate information does exist and the uncertainty is properly communicated, often decision-makers are unaware of it or cannot access it in a format they can readily use (i.e. the right information may exist but it is inaccessible to end-users due to time, expertise and/or technological constraints).
